The Kopec System

A white assault on the Sicilian Defense.

Typical Kopec System position after 5. Bc2

Invented, developed, and practiced by IM Danny Kopec, the Kopec System has appeared in high-level play with increasing frequency lately.  Precisely because it challenges conventional notions about the Sicilian Defense, players of the black pieces are forced “out of book” early.  Play for both sides proceeds along strategic lines not normally associated with the Sicilian.  Playing black now becomes defensive rather than offensive, a situation uncomfortable for players of the Sicilian.
